March 23rd Fishing Report

Straightline Guides - Saturday, March 23, 2019

The river is finally thawing, the water is opening up, and the fish haven’t seen flies in months which means they are eager to bite! Over the winter the fish start to relax and slow down dramatically, once spring hits and the water warms up the fish begin metabolizing well and biting more. The Yampa is fishing well and there is even starting to be some dry fly opportunity with midge patterns.

The float season is going to be excellent this year. Book your trip early, because spots are already filling up! There will most likely be a window for float trips in about a month, and then the river will most likely be too fast for trips for a bit. However, June and July should be excellent, especially if we see a steady melt, versus a quick melt, this spring.

We are still enjoying the tail end of ice fishing season as well! It’s still a viable option if you would like to spend a day out on the lake!
