Steamboat Resort conditions remained soft and powdery over the weekend even with the large crowds due to the Winter Wondergrass festival. We saw about 5 inches fall on Saturday night with warm and sunny conditions on Sunday. Monday morning brought some very flat light with it in the morning, but throughout the day the skies cleared, and the sun came out in the later afternoon.
This week looks like it should bring some more snow, with the best chance for a powder day on Friday or Saturday. The resort has an excellent base, which means almost every run on the mountain is well covered and soft. Even several days after a powder day, there are always small stashes of snow to be found if you know where to go. Below are a few of our favorite secret powder stashes:
- Broadway trees: Accessible by South Peak lift.
- Arc trees to Spur Run: Accessible by Elkhead Express.
- 1:30 trees: Accessible by Sundown or Sunshine lifts.
- Tepee trees: Accessible by the Gondola or Thunderhead Express.
If you need advice on where to ski on the resort, feel free to come in and speak with our expert ski tuners, they have a ton of knowledge about the resort and daily conditions.
Backcountry conditions have been great as well with tons of powder, however avalanche danger has been EXTREMELY high. With temperatures fluctuating between warm and freezing, there has been a lot of melting and re-freezing of the snow in the backcountry with makes for an extremely unstable snow pack. If you are planning to ski in the backcountry please go informed about the conditions in the area and of course bring your beacon, shovel, probe and a buddy!
Safe skiing and happy trails!
